Figures and Trajectories of Deception between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Toward an Introduction, by Roberta Mucciarelli
The semantic field of deception, from medieval Latin vocabulary (decipere/deceptio, fallere/ falsum) to Old Italian (ingannare), runs through a long theological-juridical elaboration: from the sins of the tongue to seventeenth-century debates on simulation and dissimulation (Accetto, Machiavelli). The traitor, the fraudulent merchant, the cunning peasant, the impostor, the deceiving woman are the recurring figures of the medieval stereotype, traced here before introducing the issue’s individual contributions, united by attention to doctrinal, normative and judicial vocabulary: market irregularities, the coniello trick in Sienese gambling, judicial testimony by unknown persons (Hubert), the discernment of spirits (Gagliardi), and the fiduciary doctor-patient relationship in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Naples (Rosolino). These cases measure the tension between the sheer phenomenological breadth of deception and the legal and theological tools that attempt to reduce it to a graspable juridical category, at a time when “fraud” (truffa) did not yet exist as a defined offense.

Dardanarii, institores, regratarii: Market Magic and the Illusions of Retail Trade, di Giacomo Todeschini
The late medieval expansion of retail commerce – encompassing both new goods and secondhand wares – produced, between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, a proliferation of minor traders and resellers whose social and juridical status remained persistently unstable. Theologians and legislators characterised these figures by recourse to Roman legal categories: the dardanarius, condemned in Roman law as a hoarder and speculator profiting from scarcity, alongside the institor and the Greek propola, both of whom carried connotations of social degradation. This assimilation was not merely taxonomic. By the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it had opened a discursive space in which the ancient magician Dardanus – mythologised as the sorcerous architect of price inflation – could re-enter learned and normative writing as an ideal type, or mythic prototype, for the uncanny capacity attributed to petty traders (tricoli) to enchant the value of things: to set prices and establish criteria of value that were unpredictable and corrosive of market order.

On trust and mistrust in communal Italy. Is the judicial testimony of an “unknown” individual credible?, by Etienne Hubert
The article studies the notion of the “unknown person” in the judicial system of communal Italy, highlighting the tensions between trust and mistrust that it conveys. Medieval jurists, commenting on the Corpus iuris civilis, attempted to define this complex figure. Legal sources related to judicial procedures provide a catalog of trustworthy witnesses and show how the qualification of “unknown person” could refer to foreigners, socially obscure individuals, or people whose reputation was doubtful. Witnesses had to be of “good reputation,” and the “unknowns” were often excluded or subjected to torture to ensure the truthfulness of their statements. The mistrust towards the “unknowns” reflected a social hierarchy, where only “known” and integrated individuals were deemed trustworthy. This categorization had significant social and political implications, contributing to reinforcing distinctions between the “good people,” visible and recognized, and the “unknowns,” perceived as suspicious and infamous, and excluded from the social and political body.

Promesse e inganni.

Promises and Deceptions. Clerics and Physicians on Trial for Unpaid Treatments (Naples, 17th-18th Centuries), by Riccardo Rosolino
The subject of this article is the doctor–patient relationship, analyzed through judicial elements emerged from civil lawsuits handled by the Archbishopric Court of Naples concerning unpaid medical fees. What is brought to judgment are the fraudulent strategies employed by clerics seeking to evade the debts incurred for treatments received from physicians, who are, at times, accused of the ways in which they carried out their professional duties, at other times of the fairness of the fees charged or of the deceptive promises made to the patient, and, in still other cases, of the damage caused in violation of the rules governing their Art. At the same time, the article attempts to reconstruct the effects of the fading of the pact of healing, an event that radically reshaped the doctor–patient relationship. This shift placed the relationship on a footing of trust, freeing it from a promise that was legally inadmissible and morally objectionable, and removing it from the rigid obligational logic in which it had long been confined until the beginning of the early modern age. Yet, as the cases examined show, this transformation also exposed the relationship to deceptive practices carried out by both parties.

The mala vita of the coniellatore. Images and representations of a rogue figure (Siena, 13th-14th century), by Roberta Mucciarelli
Through a case study, this contribution investigates, in late medieval Siena, the emergence and characterization of a figure of deceit that the vernacular called coniellatore: a type of swindler who emerges from the degraded milieu of gambling to sow victims across the boundless world of the simple and the naive. The underground and ubiquitous vice of gambling supplies the material for the art of deception in which he is a master. But beyond the offense to individuals, it is the honor of the Comune that is violated. The coniellatore renders uncertain and unstable the terrain of relations built on fides, which is the decisive plane on which societies and their institutions rest. While the mystery of obscure etymology remains unresolved, normative texts and new documentary evidence of judicial and administrative origin help bring into focus the legal profile and criminal physiognomy of the figure, mirrored against the countermeasures set up by the authorities. An exact inversion of social respectability, over the course of the Trecento the term coniellatore expands its “semantic grip” onto a broader social base, becoming a performative indicator of mala fama.

Recognizing fraud: the deceptions of urban commerce in the works of Antoninus of Florence, by Luca Ughetti
This paper examines the development of the concept of fraud in the writings of Antonino Pierozzi (1389-1459), Archbishop of Florence, demonstrating how discourse on economic irregularities defines the identity and legitimacy of the city’s professions. In the consilia, fraud does not constitute an independent category but emerges in specific cases raised by correspondents (Domenico di Catalogna, Rusticiano da Brescia). The confessional treatise Omnis mortalium cura and the Lenten work Convertimini articulate the subject according to the Thomistic tripartite division (quantity, quality, substance) and arrange it for a broader audience. The Defecerunt introduces a casuistic analysis of working activities that the Summa moralis (2.1.16-17 and 3.8.1-4) further expands, linking them to the conditions of legitimate commerce. With the progressive broadening of Antonino’s analysis, professions come to be recognized within economic discourse and the civic sphere. In the Chronica, through the episodes of the monte comune and the failure of the Bardi company, fraud directly undermines the common good: Antonino’s additions to Leonardo Bruni’s Historia constitute an early core of economic history in the city chronicle and reveal the significance that the recognition of fraud assumes in the building of civic trust.

A Discreet Control. How the Discernment of Spirits Shifted from Being a Charism to Being an Institutional Function, by Isabella Gagliardi
This contribution addresses the conceptual definition and the practice of the discernment of spirits as they emerge from a selection of works composed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In particular, it analyzes the texts of two eminent theologians, Henry of Langenstein and Jean Gerson, as authoritative and widely circulated works, alongside the writings of an Augustinian friar from Siena, Girolamo da Siena, which show how the practice of discernment developed. The analysis shows that the discernment of spirits became a genuine instrument of social control. Attested as a charism by the evangelical canon, it was transformed into a priestly exercise through the construction of a theological interpretive framework that absorbed the charism into the ecclesiastical institution. In this way, the right to mark the boundary between what proceeds from the Spirit of God and what is caused by the devil was recognized as belonging to the priestly order alone. This occurred between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, at a crucial cultural turning point, because it vested in the ecclesiastical institution alone the faculty of judging true and false in matters of the interior life, making the Church the sole arbiter in the forum of conscience.

Florence and the Medici seen from the Spanish court culture in the Golden Age, by Giovanni Ciappelli
Despite the actual relations between Spain and Tuscany between 1550 and 1650, a reconstruction of the image that each of the two states, with their respective intellectuals, had of the other is missing. The essay, after a quick review of the main events that punctuate the relations between the two courts, tries to reconstruct the way in which Florence and the Medici were seen by the Spanish court at the beginning of the 17th century, in literary production. If in the works of Cervantes, Lope de Vega and others Florence represents above all an exotic setting, and the Medici, when present, are described in a conventional way and far from reality, other authors see these themes differently, either trying to give a more precise historical foundation to the events of the family, dealing with the theme of the assassination of Duke Alessandro by Lorenzino, or providing a searing reading (this is the case of Quevedo) of the way in which the Medici should manage their power.

The Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) Turns Ten in 2026, di Serge Noiret
This article reconstructs the first decade of the Italian Association of Public History, founded in Rome in 2016 under the joint initiative of the Giunta Centrale per gli Studi Storici and the IFPH, situating it within the North American genealogy of the discipline (Robert Kelley, UCSB, 1975-1979; NCPH, 1979-1980) and the international trajectory of the IFPH (2010- 2011). It traces AIPH’s eight national conferences (Ravenna 2017 to Udine 2026), the relationship between public archaeology and public history in Italy, the association’s thematic working groups (Gender Public History, history and games), its editorial and documentary infrastructure (ELPHi, the biennial Newsletter, the new journal «Storia pubblica»), and the still unresolved effort to secure professional recognition for public historians from the Ministry of Culture. This essay functions both as an institutional balance sheet and as a reflection on the scientific, ethical and professional status of the discipline ahead of the tenth-anniversary conference in October 2026.
