The paper examines aspects and moments of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, seeing it as the latest episode of the long debate on the Italian identity and its alleged fragility, on the national character and the particular ways in which it has evolved throughout history. Particular focus is given to: the official celebratory machine, the criteria that have characterized its action and some of its special projects, such as the “Places of memory”; to the initiatives of “Torino 150”; to cultures and movements that have not joined in the celebrations. The events of 2011 are in the end confronted concisely with previous jubilees of 1911 and 1961, to consider in a historical perspective the climate that has marked the anniversary of the 150th.
Keywords: Identity, Memory, Celebration, Nation

This essay reconstructs the debate about the relation between Resistance and Risorgimento starting from the Centenary of the Italian Unification. At that time the idea of the Resistance as a completion of the Risorgimento, thanks to the participation of the popular masses mediated by mass parties, had its greatest fulfillment. Later with the center-left coalitions, on the contrary, the centrality of the Resistance was exalted, emphasizing the role of the antifascism in the construction of a more participatory and attentive to social rights democracy. During the seventies, this interpretation ended up also include the PCI, thus the Resistance had become the legitimizing event of the Republic of the parties. In the eighties, the wear of the national political system and of the Welfare-State weakened the anti-fascist paradigm, reopening finally, after 1989, the debate on the different ideas of fatherland built during the national history. The attempt by President Ciampi to reconcile the recovery of the Patriotic dimension with the tradition of the Resistance seems to be occurred on the basis of a critical reassessment of the political legacy of the antifascism.

During the celebration of the centenary of national unification, which lasted from 1960- 61 until 1970, the most important Italian popular publisher launched a series of major popular illustrated history works in instalments which were sold in newspaper kiosks. These works were usually appreciated by the public with the only significant exception of the Storia d’Italia by the publisher Einaudi which was re-published in weekly illustrated instalments by the Publisher Fabbri in 1985. On the contrary the success of the Storia d’Italia by IndroMontanelli (an already well-known author) was memorable selling six million copies in newspaper kiosks! A very rich iconography was the common character of these popular history works and a great appeal for kiosk’s customers which were also massive consumers of popular illustrated magazines using a simple and accessible language with a journalistic style and journalistic effects, what we could call a real ”live history”. The contribution of academic historians in the field of popular history has been marginal. In fact, since the second post war period appeared the reassuring figure of the journalist-writer of history. Such a popular history writer asserted her/his own control over the public use of popular history in Italy.

Which history of Italy has been celebrated in 2011-12? The emphasis on the nation and the Risorgimento suggests a link between the rise of a post-modern idea of nation and the political decline of the Italian State in Europe. The essay explores the different targets set by two Presidents of the Republic, first Ciampi and then Napolitano, and their success in setting aside the discourse on territorial secession. The author reviews exhibitions and conferences which have dealt with the whole of Italian history and the Republic. The intertwining between politics and historiography survives in disguise. An asymmetry emerges: while politics seeks legitimacy from the past, it can dispense with history; whereas historiography cannot go back to her previous political role because of the consumption of the great teleological narratives. It risks subalternity to fragile political and cultural forces grounded on the cut between past and present.

Starting from an interview released in 2001 by Carlo Azelio Ciampi, President of the Italian Republic, this paper investigates briefly what has been achieved during the celebrations of the Risorgimento, the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification. The essay focuses on identity issues and Italians’ self-representation. The author points out that commemorating an “appealing past” –in this case, the origins of the Italian State building- was lacking of the professional participation of trained Public Historians. These were not present in the Official Committee for the Celebrations of the Italian Unification. Therefore, despite the commemoration activities have been very successful in terms of audience, some best-selling books openly challenged the need for, and the overall process of unification. The author suggests that openly revisionist ideas on the Risorgimento made their way to the public thanks to a lack of ability to offer a scientific narrative engaging the wider audience which participated to public commemoration activities. What the concept of “Italian Identity” meant during the 150th anniversary celebrations is then discussed with three different groups of stakeholders: intellectuals from various backgrounds, political scientists and historians.
